Firehouse Subs donates $25,000 over Veterans Day backlash

There is a new development in The Sandwich Shop Story Savannah Area Social Media he buzzed about.

Firehouse Subs has issued an apology regarding a reported incident at its Pooler location on Veterans Day.

The national chain had a special for veterans and active duty service members, offering them a free meal in honor of their service. A customer at the Pooler location reported unprofessional behavior from the owner, including foul language, name calling and general rudeness to customers and the special that he said cost him a lot of money.

The story of the incident went viral online, being read and shared thousands of times, and led to a slew of negative reviews for Pooler’s sandwich shop.

A statement from the company says Firehouse Subs has spoken with the customer in question, offered its sincerest apologies and pledged to donate $25,000 to a local veterans organization recommended by the customer.

“We take our history of supporting veterans and first responders seriously and are taking immediate action to address this issue with the franchisee,” the company said. “This experience is not representative of the proud work of our brand, our franchisees and the thousands of team members across the country who together served nearly 150,000 meals this Veterans Day in gratitude to our local heroes.

The donation will come from Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.

The Savannah Morning News had not received comment from the owner or customer as of 1 p.m. Friday.
