DNR to hunters: Be safe, be seen

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Deer hunting season is a week and a day away. DNR officials say remember: Be safe, be seen!

The statewide open firearms hunting season, as you know, is big business here in Wisconsin. Whether you’re an experienced hunter or a first-time hunter, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants you to always be aware of statewide regulations and ways to keep you and other hunters safe during the 9-day season.

All hunters, including waterfowl hunters, must wear at least 50% fluorescent orange or pink above the waist. That means if you’re wearing a hat or hoodie, it needs to be at least 50% orange or hot pink.

Public land users are encouraged to wear fluorescent orange or pink during any hunting season, even if they are not hunting.

If you’re out on public land with your dog, also consider a fluorescent orange or pink vest or bandana.

The DNR also reminds you to follow “TAB-K,” the acronym for the four basic rules of firearms safety:

  • T – Treat each firearm as if it were loaded
  • A – Always point the muzzle in a safe direction
  • B – Be sure of your target and what lies beyond it
  • K – Keep your finger off the trigger guard until you read to fire

The DNR website it’s a great place to stay current on regulations and safety.

Deer hunting season will begin next Saturday, November 23rd.
