Barcelona-based newspaper La Vanguardia joins Britain’s Guardian in exiting Elon Musk’s X after US election win for Trump

The Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia has followed in the footsteps of the British publication The Guardian and is giving up X (formerly Twitter).

After the British newspaper shut down its accounts on the social network owned by billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday, citing allegations that the platform was “toxic”, the Barcelona-based station said it would stop tweeting directly to X and suspend accounts.

La Vanguardia claims that the platform “has become a space where conspiracy theories and disinformation find an echo chamber.”

However, it will continue to “follow the people, entities, companies and institutions on the network to keep its readers informed of the messages and debates that may be happening there.”

The Guardian reported on Wednesday that “the US presidential election has served to confirm” what it has been considering for some time: that X is a “toxic media platform and that its owner, Elon Musk, has used his influence to shape the political debate. ‘.

The decision of the two newspapers follows the example of other institutions and mass media that have also decided to disconnect from the social network.

NPR, the US national public radio station, decided to suspend its accounts on X last April. The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has also taken similar measures.

La Vanguardia explained that his decision “coincides with Donald Trump’s announcement to appoint Elon Musk and former Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), with the aim of reducing the US administration”.

Its director, Jordi Juan, published an article in which he stated that the intention is “not to contribute the traffic generated by La Vanguardia to the growth of this platform”.

He added that La Vanguardia journalists were free to keep their personal accounts on X.
