A former NFL linebacker who played for the Detroit Lions is facing charges for allegedly engaging in a series of attacks on law enforcement during The January 6 attack on the Capitol, court records show.

Leander Antwione Williams, 31, was arrested Thursday in what appears to be the first new Capitol violation case filed by federal prosecutors since Election Day.

His charges include assaulting officers, civil disturbance and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, according to a criminal complaint filed last week.

Williams was a fifth-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2016 and also played linebacker for the XFL’s DC Defenders, according to public reports.

In the charging document, which was unsealed Thursday after his arrest in Savannah, Georgia, prosecutors detailed how Williams allegedly joined the pro-Trump mob to engage in several violent clashes with officers trying to protect the Capitol .

In one case, Williams was caught on police body camera footage pulling bike racks from the police line and then hitting an officer in the head, according to the complaint. Another video showed Williams grabbing and pulling two officers who appeared to be trying to push him, according to the complaint.

Williams was eventually identified by the FBI following a series of tips from December 2022, according to the complaint. Agents eventually confirmed his identity in the photos using a signature keychain he was seen wearing on his belt loop during the riot, which they cross-referenced with other images from his social media profiles social media, according to the complaint.

Williams did not enter a plea to the felony charges he currently faces and did not have an attorney represented Thursday afternoon.

His arrest is further evidence that the Justice Department plans to continue prosecuting those found to have carried out attacks during the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, despite former President-elect Donald Trump declaring his intention to grant pardons or commuting. the sentences for his followers who joined the attack once he took office in January.

Prosecutors from the DCUS attorney’s office have spent the past week arguing against a wave of filings since Jan. 6 by defendants seeking to delay their cases in hopes of being pardoned once Trump takes office. In most, but not all, cases, these requests have gone down without a hitch, the judges overseeing their cases.
