Police have arrested and charged two Manchester men in connection with last month’s murder and robbery at a supermarket in Maggotty, St Elizabeth.

Ramanno Smile, a 30-year-old electrician, and 35-year-old chef Shawn Reid, both from Knock Patrick in Manchester, were held on Thursday, November 14, by detectives assigned to the St Elizabeth Criminal Investigation Branch ( CIB) for the October 19 murder of 62-year-old Aggrey Atkinson. Two illegal firearms were confiscated during the operation.

The men are said to have entered a supermarket in Maggotty and posed as customers, before one of them held a handgun and the other stood at the door as a lookout. The man with the gun allegedly jumped the counter and stole an undetermined amount of phone cards, cigarettes and money from the owner.

During the melee, Atkinson, a businessman from the Russell Hill district of the parish, was shot and killed. The men then escaped in a waiting car.
A police report was made and the men were searched and arrested.

Both now face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated robbery, possession of prohibited weapons and unauthorized possession of ammunition. Their court dates are being finalized.
