A Northern Ireland man who was extradited from the United States has been jailed for indecently assaulting his niece more than 40 years ago.

The Londonderry man, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, admitted 12 counts of assault in prison on dates between August 1975 and August 1979.

Londonderry Crown Court was told the abuse began when the victim was 11.

Judge Neil Rafferty sentenced the man to 18 months in prison, a further 18 months on license and two years’ probation.
