RG&E rules out natural gas line in Greece, NY house explosion

Firefighters continue to investigate what caused an explosion that leveled a house in Greece and injured three people this week.

However, the incident was not triggered by a natural gas line serving the home on Stone Road in Greece, according to records. Rochester Gas & Electric Corp.

“RG&E thoroughly tested our gas line to the home,” the utility said in a written statement. “These tests demonstrate that our gas pipelines did not cause or contribute to this event. We are confident that this was an isolated incident and does not pose any threat to the community. RG&E continues to assist and support the fire investigator.”

A house on the 800 block of Stone Road was leveled by an explosion just before 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Barnard Fire District, the lead agency that responded to the scene. Neighbors said they saw the three residents leaving the house shortly after the explosion.

The trio — a woman in her 20s and her parents — were hospitalized with burns, Barnard Fire Chief Stephen Andrews said. The younger woman was the most seriously injured and was under observation, he said.

The explosion caused significant damage to the home, neighbors’ homes and the surrounding area, Andrews said.
