Bail set at $3 million for Trotters robbery suspect | Local news

A 21-year-old man from El Socorro has been granted $3 million bail for his alleged involvement in an armed robbery at Trotters Restaurant and Bar, Maraval Road, Port of Spain, last Thursday.

Master Sarah De Silva granted bail to Omaly Nurse yesterday.

The nurse, a construction worker, of Jojo Lane, El Socorro, appeared virtually before the master around 3:30 p.m., charged with six offenses.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

He and others who had a firearm allegedly robbed an employee of the liquor business of $55,000 on Nov. 7.

They also robbed three other people in the restaurant of various items, including their cell phones, bank cards, cash and jewelry worth thousands of dollars, and also attempted to rob two others.

He appeared at Besson Street Police Station and was represented by lawyers Keron Ramkhalwhan and Anwar Hosein.

Hosein, in his bail application, said his client has a clean criminal record and has never been in trouble with the law.

The lawyer argued that although the problems his client was charged with were of a serious nature and widespread in society, there was no evidence to suggest he would commit any crime while on bail.

In addition, Hosein claimed that neither he nor Nurse had any problem with the conditions attached to the bail.

Hosein stressed that none of the stolen items were found in his client’s possession following his arrest near the Queen’s Park Savannah minutes after the armed robbery took place.

In response to his claims, the court’s police prosecutor, Acting Cpl Rostant, said the prosecution was opposing bail because of concerns Nurse could interfere with and intimidate victims.

He noted that CCTV footage clearly identified the nurse as one of the robbers, even though none of the stolen items or the firearm used to commit the robbery was found in his possession when he was arrested.

The prosecutor added that police were moving in with three other suspects.

Master De Silva said based on Nurse’s clean criminal record, she was going to set bail at $300,000 with a $30,000 cash alternative.

As conditions of his bail, he must make no contact, directly or indirectly, with any of the victims; must stay at least 300 meters from the Trotters at all times; and he must also report to the officers of the Barataria Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

The nurse is scheduled to appear in court on January 23.
