SAN ANTONIO – A 46-year-old inmate, Marcus Joseph Fontenette, has died at the Bexar County Jail.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Fontenette was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine check. Prison staff immediately initiated life-saving measures, but he was later pronounced dead by first responders.

The exact cause of death is currently under investigation by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. However, preliminary findings suggest a possible medical episode.

In accordance with the Sandra Bland Act, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office 2nd Precinct is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident. In addition, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative investigation. Jail officials also notified the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
