Suspect in custody after shooting at police vehicles and crashing in downtown Yakima

YAKIMA, Wash.– A suspect is now in custody after a pursuit this morning that involved shots being fired at police vehicles and ended in a crash in downtown Yakima.

It all started just before 11 a.m. this morning when Yakima Police Department Acting Chief Shawn Boyle said officers were called to a report of what appeared to be a stolen vehicle in Yakima. He said the SUV was taken without permission.

An officer located the vehicle and began a pursuit, but when they considered calling off the pursuit, the suspect fired shots into a parked patrol car, continuing the pursuit when police determined the actions posed a “danger to the community.”

The suspect fired several shots during the chase and hit at least three patrol cars.

Chief Boyle said the pursuit was eastbound on N. 4th and W. Yakima Ave. when the suspect crashed into an uninvolved Roto Rooter van, one person was taken to the hospital with injuries.

“The suspect was arrested after the crash, he was also transported to the hospital, he is under the influence of a medical clearance before being booked into jail,” Boyle said.

The Washington State Patrol will oversee the crash investigation, while the Yakima Police Department will investigate the attacks on their officers.

Chief Boyle says there were about five or six officers who were shot during the pursuit, but will have a better number on that later. No officers were injured during the incident.

The Yakima School District informed us, as a precaution, the entire school district went into a secure and taught for approximately five minutes.

This is a developing story, once we get more information we will keep you updated.
