Community seeking answers after 2 missing men found dead in St. Joseph River

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – Our team is working to get answers after two men went missing over the weekend both were found dead Late Wednesday afternoon, inside a pickup truck that had crashed into the St. Joseph, just outside Elkhart.

Thursday morning, we got some clarity from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, which says it mistakenly wrote the time of the crash in its Wednesday night news release.

Deputies tell our team that the initial tip incorrectly stated that the crash happened at 3:46pm on Wednesday, when it should have said that’s when the crash site was discovered.

So we’re still waiting to find out exactly when the truck crashed, and so are the police.

The two men recovered from the truck were identified as Theo Bean, 30, of Elkhart, and Tireno Washington, 39, of Bristol. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office says Bean and Washington had been missing since early Sunday morning.

Capt. Michael Culp of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office says a Bristol police officer found evidence at the crash site that led to the grim discovery.

“Our agencies were working together to try to find them,” Culp said. “Preliminary information is that the vehicle has left the roadway. Obviously, with it being submerged, we have further analysis of the vehicle and any other evidence we have at the scene just to do a reconstruction and hopefully through our investigation, we’ll be able to determine if there’s any evidence to suggest. if other vehicles were involved.”

Culp also clarified that a Facebook post about the missing men that was shared by the sheriff’s office less than 10 minutes after officers discovered the crash scene was just a coincidence. He says the post was shared at 3.55pm on Wednesday because police had exhausted all leads and needed the public’s help.

At this point in the investigation, foul play is not suspected. Autopsies for both men are scheduled for Friday morning.

Our team also spoke with a family spokesperson who provided a more detailed timeline of what happened from the time the men disappeared to where things stand now. ***NOTE: We have not been provided a timeline from them as they are still working to put one together.***
