CROSS stars Aldis Hodge and Isaiah Mustafa studied sociopath

Much has been made about Aldis Hodge being the best-looking Alex Cross to ever play the part, but it turns out the star isn’t the only pantyhose in the stunning cast.

When audiences tune in to watch Prime Video which debuts on Thursday, November 14, will often find him working alongside his detective partner John Sampson, who is masterfully played by Isaiah Mustafa.

BOSSIP Senior Content Director sat down with Hodge and Mustafa ahead of the show’s premiere to discuss how they developed as a dynamic duo and what they learned about the minds of serial killers during production as a team of detectives investigating a murderer in freedom.

Aldis Hodge and Isaiah Mustafa supported each other on and offscreen CROSS

“It’s a real brotherhood that you see, as much as the support that you see on screen, which is reflected off screen, is kind of a casualty of our relationship in real life,” Hodge told BOSSIP.

“Yes, I had no choice,” Mustafa interjected jokingly.

“We were lucky to be able to work with each other on this because we have equal respect for each other as individuals, as men, as artists, and when we step on set, it’s really a team effort.” Hodge continued. “When we’re moving between scenes, if we want to add something to the dynamic of the scene or take it away or try to find the right tone, we’re just like, ‘Hey man, look, I’ve got a thought… I’ve got an idea… How how do you feel about it? Boom, boom, boom…’ and then we go because we’re building it together and what we have just as collaborators, you know how many times you step on set and we happen to be great collaborators.”

CROSS Stars Aldis Hodge and Isaiah Mustafa met with the forensic psychologist before filming

The vibes of brotherhood were very real when I spoke with Hodge and Mustafa about their research in forensic psychology. Hodge began by joking that as scary as things appear on screen, he and Mustafa were undaunted by the challenges they faced.

“First of all, I’ve never been scared, okay?” Hodge exaggerates. “I’m here, okay? We out. Extensive research was done on previous real-life serial killers, and I was able to sit back and study and learn about all these people, in one little bucket. It’s weird how people are motivated, but at the same time, in their world, they feel like this is normal for them, so it was a little unnerving, but it’s interesting.”

“We had the opportunity to go to a forensic psychologist together and she talked to us with another detective, a real detective in the room, so we were able to take notes on it and everything,” added Mustafa. “He had a book he gave us called The sociopath next door (by Martha Stout, Ph.D.) So that opened my eyes to a lot of things that I wouldn’t have known about regular people walking around…like the thoughts that might pass through one’s mind.”

“Did you find any familiar things?” joked Hodge, showing the kind of ribbing that seemed to confirm the actor’s closeness.

“I found you in that book,” replied Mustafa.

“Yeah, because I think I found you,” Hodge replied.

“I know you found me, I’m on the page right next to you,” laughed Mustafa.

All jokes aside, Hodge and Mustafa are brilliant CROSSespecially watching them put together the puzzle pieces left behind by the sociopath at the heart of Season 1’s story.
