Gunman shot by Maine deputies in Harrison

HARRISON (WGME) – A Maine man was seriously injured after he was shot during an armed standoff with law enforcement Wednesday in Harrison.

Authorities say he is expected to recover.

Police say the incident happened on Hawk Ridge Road in Harrison after a 57-year-old man called police. He said he was armed and threatening to harm himself.

Investigators say the man then hung up, and when police arrived around 1:15 p.m., he fired multiple shots at deputies.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says family members were inside the man’s home, but they were unable to communicate with the armed suspect.

When he finally left the home, police say he confronted deputies with a gun, and three Cumberland County deputies shot and wounded him.

He was then airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he is expected to recover.

The incident closed Deer Hill Road for several hours, but it has since been reopened to traffic.

Per standard protocol, the three deputies who shot the suspect have been placed on administrative leave while the Attorney General’s Office investigates.
