Three non-fatal overdoses in Jacksonville believed to be linked to pink cocaine

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Although Jacksonville police and the Jacksonville DEA office said their officers did not encounter any suspects possessing or selling pink cocaine, the Florida Poison Control Centers Jacksonville office reported three non-fatal overdoses related to pink cocaine.

According to poison control, all three overdose victims told local emergency room doctors that they had taken pink cocaine, which also goes by the names 2C, Tussi and Tucibi.

It’s a fairly new and dangerous compound that has local health officials and federal law enforcement officials sounding the alarm.

Pink cocaine appeared in big cities like Miami, New York and Boston.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, pink cocaine was mainly found in nightclubs. Not only is the medicine pink because of the food coloring added to it, but it also has a sweet smell.

DEA Assistant Special Agent Mike Dubet is the head of the DEA’s Jacksonville office. He said the sweet-smelling, rose-colored drug is being marketed as a new type of cocaine, but in reality it is far from new.

“It’s a combination of different drugs that already exist,” Dubet said.

In some cases, pink cocaine turns out to be a combination of cocaine and fentanyl with added food coloring. In other cases, it’s not even cocaine. Instead, it’s a mix of molly, meth, caffeine, and ketamine—or a combination of other opioids and hallucinogens. And just like regular cocaine, it can be injected, smoked or snorted.

Dr. Sonya Rashid is an emergency physician in Jacksonville. She is also a toxicologist at the Florida Poison Control Center. She said the symptoms and complications of pink cocaine overdose will vary depending on what the drug was cut from.

“If it’s cocaine and ketamine, you’re going to see a very hyper-aware state. You will see someone with a fast heart rate, with a lot of energy. They will also hallucinate from the effects of ketamine and have a lot of energy from the cocaine. If there is caffeine in it, you will have a very hyperstimulated state. If there are opioids in it, you could go into respiratory depression and stop breathing,” the doctor said.

Pink cocaine was under the radar until his death last month Liam Paynemember of the pop group One Direction. His death brought a huge spotlight on the drug. After Payne fell to her death from a balcony in Buenos Aires, suicide was ruled out as a cause of death when a toxicology report revealed she had pink cocaine in her system. The report suggests that Payne was under a hallucinogen when he fell to his death.

JSO Commander Jordan Dowling told News4JAX that while patrol officers and the narcotics unit have not come into contact with suspected pink cocaine dealers, JSO monitors other law enforcement agencies and departments that investigate cases of pink cocaine.

“Whatever they’re dealing with nationally is bound to come to Jacksonville and vice versa, so we want to make sure we use the information they’ve gathered across the country and the state and make sure we’re using best practices here in jacksonville. Dowling said.
