Glen Powell, who often praised Tom Cruise and called him a mentor, recently responded to rumors about replacing the actor in the Mission Impossible franchise. Powell quickly put the speculation to rest, jokingly saying that “his mother would never let me do that.” He added that action movies like Mission Impossible are known for their intense stunts, many of which are performed by Cruise himself, which Powell said are “the worst gigs in town.” Despite having played a pilot alongside Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, Powell rejected the idea of taking on the role of Ethan Hunt. He jokingly referred to the Mission Impossible franchise as “a death trap” due to the risky stunts and demanding filming schedules.

Rumors of Powell replacing Cruise began circulating online when InSneider reported that Cruise himself wants Powell to take over the role after The Final Reckoning is released in 2025. However, when the speculation was discussed on The Pat McAfee Show , Powell made it clear during a phone call that he could never replace an actor like Cruise, who has been in the Mission Impossible films since 1996. The young actor said, “My mom would never let me do this. It’s the worst gig in town, everybody knows it. It’s a death trap.”

After the release of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, Glen Powell, praising Tom Cruise, told Vanity Fair: “He’s made big changes, the guy has always pushed the limits. People forget, because now they look at him as the greatest stuntman of all time, but when you look at a movie like A Few Good Men, Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Eyes Wide Shut, Rain Man, these are movies. these aren’t typical movie star roles, but because he’s Tom, he’s made them so iconic and so cool. I feel like his career is like that, in the best way, all around.”

Powell reportedly originally auditioned for the role of Rooster, the son of Maverick’s best friend Goose, played by Anthony Edwards in the original film. The role was played by Miles Teller.

Glen Powell is currently busy filming the remake of the 1987 film Running Man starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise recently released the first trailer for Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, which is slated for release on May 23, 2025.
