At work, there are many times when we are invited to take a break, whether we are waiting for an elevator, sitting at the coffee machine, taking a break in the smoking area, sitting to eat, or even using the restroom. These seemingly small breaks throughout our workday provide a unique opportunity to turn our attention inward and check in with ourselves. What better time could there be to practice mindfulness, self-awareness, or even reflect on gratitude or kindness?

Debasmita Sinha, Chief Psychologist and Clinical Director of Excellence at Manah Wellness, shares valuable insights into mental wellness:

Mental wellness goes beyond just acknowledging stress, anxiety or depression. It’s really about fostering a sense of balance and well-being in the everyday moments that fill our days. Instead of keeping the conversation about mental health confined to clinical settings or expert-led discussions, it’s time to bring it into our everyday spaces where people are most receptive.

There is an urgent need to normalize conversations about mental wellbeing and promote small, everyday practices that can have a significant impact. This approach encourages individuals to make decisions with their mental health in mind.

Workplace canteens are a great space to cultivate mental well-being. These areas are social hubs where employees engage in informal conversations, build relationships and de-stress. It is also the perfect environment for promoting mental health. Simple but impactful strategies, such as posting thought-provoking messages on the walls, can remind employees to prioritize their well-being. For example, imagine you’re standing in line at the cafeteria and you see a message that says, “For the next three breaths, notice your breathing” or “What did you do today for your well-being?”

These subtle messages, woven into the workplace environment, can have a powerful effect. They encourage employees to engage in positive mental health practices, influencing behavior and decision-making in ways that promote a culture of wellness throughout the organization. By integrating mental health awareness into these everyday spaces, we can transform the way employees approach their overall well-being, both at work and in life.
