Mumbai airport on alert after caller informs CISF about passenger traveling with explosives-laden luggage – The Week

Security has been beefed up at the Mumbai airport after an unidentified caller alerted security personnel about a passenger carrying explosives. Airport staff are verifying passenger details following the alert and efforts are being made to identify the caller.

According to reports, Central Industrial Security Force personnel at the Mumbai airport received a bomb threat alert on Wednesday afternoon. The caller allegedly contacted the CISF control room at the domestic terminal at the airport and informed about a passenger allegedly traveling with explosive materials in his luggage. The caller allegedly claimed that a man named Mohammad was traveling from Mumbai to Azerbaijan with explosives, News 18 reported.

The Mumbai police were immediately alerted and additional forces were deployed at the airport. Security has been increased at the airport and thorough checks are being carried out. As the caller did not mention any other travel details of the alleged passenger, security forces are maintaining a tight vigil at the airport.

The threat call comes after a spate of fake threats that have jeopardized the operations of Indian airlines. At least 100 flights of various airlines, both international and domestic, had to be rescheduled or canceled following a fake threat a few weeks ago. The civil aviation ministry is looking into including people issuing false threats on the “no-fly list”.
