Surveillance video shows new image of fatal Miami Beach motorcyclist crash by driver who fell asleep at the wheel – WSVN 7News | Miami news, weather, sports

MIAMI BEACH, FL. (WSVN) – Surveillance video has captured a new image of a deadly collision on the streets of Miami Beach.

The new angle, obtained exclusively by 7News, comes from a camera at an ATM near the corner of 41st Street and Meridian Avenue, which captured the moment a pickup truck pulled in with a motorcyclist on April 15.

It was an accident that Miami Beach police said is an incident of vehicular homicide and reckless driving.

Moments after the accident, show body camera video officers attending to the victim, who was thrown 90 meters from the crash site.

“Sir, the fire department is on its way, okay?” an officer told the victim. “Do you understand what’s going on?”

“Don’t answer,” the officer told another officer who answered.

Paramedics arrived soon after to help the injured man. Seconds later, the truck driver also appeared on the body camera to help the victim.

Are you the driver of the vehicle?” the officers asked.

“Yes, I am,” said Patrick Schiebel, 33, who was driving the truck.

“OK,” an officer said.

That night, Schiebel was allowed to go home. It took four months after the accident for him to be arrested.

Officers said Schiebel admitted to falling asleep at the wheel.

According to the arrest report, “he stated that he could remember the last time he saw the ‘Welcome to Miami Beach’ sign prior to the accident.

That crash claimed the life of a 34-year-old motorcyclist who was waiting at a red light to turn left on 41st Street, and according to police, he was not at fault in any way.

“You have the right to remain silent,” an officer told Schiebel during his arrest.

An internal affairs investigation has also been opened into the police department’s handling of this case. That investigation remains ongoing. Police said traffic homicide investigator Richard Rodriguez has been reassigned.

Detectives have not given a reason why it took them so long to make an arrest.

Schiebel is out of jail pending his trial.
