Injured Florida quarterback DJ Lagway practices for third straight day

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida’s injured DJ Lagway practiced for the third straight day Wednesday, making progress toward a potential comeback against No. 1 LSU. 21.

“He’s getting closer and closer to being ready to play,” coach Billy Napier said after practice. “We’re creating a game-day environment in terms of the treatment and the changes we use to make sure he’s comfortable with it. … Felt better today than yesterday. Hopefully that will be the case tomorrow.”

The highly touted freshman was sidelined with a strained left hamstring against Georgia on Nov. 2. He returned to the sideline in the second half with his legs wrapped and using crutches.

Tests showed his injury was “less significant” than first feared and Napier expects him to play again this season. Will it happen against the Tigers?

The Gators (4-5, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) could use him. They must win two of their last three games to become bowl eligible.

LSU (6-3, 3-2) struggled mightily against dual-threat QBs, including allowing Alabama’s Jalen Milroe to run for 185 yards and four touchdowns two weeks after Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed ran for 62 yards and three scores.

“Given their structure and the way they play defense, one of the ways to neutralize that is to use the fullback,” Napier said. “So you’ve seen more teams do that. Obviously our situation is a little bit different, but we’ll do what we have to do to manage DJ in his injury situation.”

If Lagway is unable to play against the Tigers, Aidan Warner would make his second consecutive start.
