The National Weather Service records wind damage from Helene in the Carolinas

The National Weather Service in Greer, SC has released the results of its Helene wind damage survey.

Many experienced frequent winds of 60 mph or more, with areas east of I-26 experiencing the strongest winds, with gusts over 80 mph.

Asheville Regional Airport reported a gust of 46 mph, while a weather station located on Mt. Mitchell recorded a gust of 106 mph during the storm.

The National Forest Service released its own report earlier this month and estimated that Helene damaged or destroyed more than 800,000 acres of trees.
