Man seriously injured in semi-truck crash during rainy interstate commute

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – A Kansas City man was seriously injured after a semi truck jackknifed and hit his car Wednesday morning.

Just before 8:15 a.m. on November 13, Kansas Highway Patrol got the call of a two vehicle accident on I-635 near I-70.

KHP reported a semi was merging onto I-635 northbound at K32 when the trailer swerved and crossed all lanes of traffic. The trailer struck the median barrier and then struck a Honda Accord traveling in the third lane.

The semi-trailer continued to move and struck the outer wall of the freeway barrier before coming to rest in a multi-lane jackknife position.

Traffic was reduced to one lane for about two hours. Tow trucks removed the semi around 10:10 a.m. and full traffic flow was restored shortly after.

The 35-year-old driver of the semi-truck was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. The 31-year-old Honda driver was wearing a seat belt and is suspected of being seriously injured. He was taken to an area hospital for medical treatment.

It’s unclear what caused the semi truck to flip, but road conditions were slick with rain at the time of the crash.
