A competency hearing has been ordered for the man accused of killing his roommate

A psychologist will assess a man’s mental competence accused of killing his roommate and the injury of a caregiver at a Thousand Oaks memory care facility earlier this month.

The criminal homicide case against Thomas Buckley, 58, was stayed pending the results of the evaluation. Ventura County Superior Court Judge Maureen Houska ordered the evaluation after Buckley’s attorney, an appointed public defender, questioned the defendant’s mental competency during a Nov. 6 hearing, court records show.

The case stems from a Nov. 1 incident at Silverado Memory Care on Warwick Avenue in Thousand Oaks. Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters responded around 4:40 a.m. in reference to an agitated resident who broke a window and wouldn’t let personnel approach him.

After deputies took Buckley into custody, personnel at the scene found his roommate, Michael Patterson, 72, with “serious” injuries, authorities previously reported. Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Buckley also allegedly assaulted a staff member before authorities arrived that morning, causing a minor injury.

The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office has since determined that Patterson’s cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. The agency ruled the manner of death a homicide.

Last week, the Ventura County Prosecutor’s Office filed a complaint charging Buckley with murder, assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism. The weapon used against both victims was a wheelchair pedal, according to the complaint.

No plea has yet been entered in the case. Patterson is being held at Todd Road Jail in Santa Paula County in lieu of $2 million bail, jail records show.

Buckley’s competency hearing was scheduled for the morning of Dec. 5 in Courtroom 13.

Ojai man convicted in molestation case

An Ojai man was sentenced Tuesday to 55 years to life in prison for sex crimes involving minors.

In September, jurors found Steven Wayne Bower, 54, guilty of three counts of felony lewd acts on a child, according to Ventura County Superior Court records.

Prosecutors say Bower molested two girls between 2003 and 2011. He was friends with both girls’ families, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. One girl was about 9 years old when Bower molested her on a camping trip. The other girl said she was molested around age 5 or 6 when Bower was babysitting her and later during a camping trip, according to the release.

Bower’s attorney has filed an appeal, court records show. Bower remained lodged at the county’s main jail as of Wednesday afternoon.
