The “Good Dad Act” would give unwed fathers in Alabama parental rights with the mother’s approval

Alabama state Rep. Patrick Sellers, D-Pleasant Grove, has prefiled a bill that would grant “all the rights and responsibilities of a parent” to unwed fathers who voluntarily acknowledge paternity.

According to the text of the bill, it would only apply if the child’s mother approves and would not apply in cases of domestic or family violence.

Sellers called his bill “The Good Dad Act” and said ABC 33/40 that its aim is to “provide children with the healthiest possible environment”.

“We hope this will prevent the harmful effects that occur when a child is raised by a single parent,” he said.

The bill would also prevent parents from removing a child from Alabama without the other parent’s or the court’s permission.

And it would require a judge to consider joint custody and shared parenting time as the best option in cases involving child custody, visitation or child support unless subsequent evidence shows otherwise, according to its text.

The vendors bill is currently being acted upon in the House Judiciary Committee.
