An attack at a north Belfast school is being investigated as a hate crime, police said.

The incident happened on Tuesday in the playground of the Belfast Model School for Girls.

In a letter to parents and guardians, headteacher Paula Stuart said the school was “aware of various claims circulating on social media”.

She added that the claims had “led to increased tensions in our community, negatively impacting on students’ well-being and their sense of safety”.

DUP MP Brian Kingston said he was “very concerned” about the “physical incident” that took place.

Kingston said there was “a great deal of concern from students and parents.”

“It is important that the relevant authorities resolve what has happened and action is taken,” he added.

The Education Authority (EA) confirmed it is working with the school and the PSNI in accordance with “robust and established processes and procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing” of pupils.

Kingston also appealed to students and parents to “remain calm” and allow a “full investigation”.

In a statement, the EA said: “It is important to note that, contrary to some reports, there is no evidence to support inaccurate claims or fears expressed on social media about the safety of pupils at the school.

“We would ask for support to help stop the spread of such information.”

Insp. Alan Lowry said the Police Service of Northern Ireland was “liaising with key stakeholders in relation to this matter”.

The PSNI appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
