AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office responded Wednesday afternoon to an incident on Jefferson Highway involving someone in crisis who may have a firearm.

According to ACSO, schools in the Wilson School Complex were placed under a “Secure” code out of an abundance of caution at 1:15 p.m.

During a “secure” code, all people stay inside and all exterior doors are locked, said John Childs, Augusta County Public Schools’ executive director of administrative and communications services.

There was a heavy police presence in this area during the “secure” code. ACSO approved dismissing most students at their normal time, Childs said, except for four buses that were released at about 3:30 p.m.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of our families and the assistance provided by the sheriff’s office,” Childs said.
