Sabers defenseman Samuelsson is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury. Thompson, Luukkonen day to day

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo sabers defender Matthias Samuelsson is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury, coach Lindy Ruff said Wednesday.

Ruff called the severity of the injury “pretty severe.” He did not specify the nature, but said Samuelsson is not expected to need surgery.

Samuelsson was injured in a 7-5 loss to Montreal on Monday when a Canadiens player rolled on his leg. It was Samuelsson’s first game back after missing three as a healthy scratch in Ruff’s attempt to shake up his roster.

Ruff listed the top scorer Tage Thompson and goalkeeper Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen day to day, with both getting a chance to play Thursday when Buffalo hosts St. Louis Blues. Thompson did not return to action on Monday after suffering a lower back injury.

Luukkonen started against Montreal despite dealing with what Ruff called an illness, and was pulled after allowing four goals on 18 shots over two periods.
