Indian Railways, one of the largest rail networks in the world, is all set to transform travel with a new, eco-friendly. train which will not need diesel or electricity.

This upcoming ‘water powered’ hydrogen train will soon hit the tracks, presenting the next step in rail transport for India.

The journey of Indian Railways started with steam engines, moved to coal and then to diesel, which though powerful is also polluting. Today, many trains run on electricity, but generating that power still requires burning coal.

Now, India is entering a new era with a revolutionary hydrogen-powered train, marking a major milestone for the nation.

Using advanced hydrogen fuel technology, the train will run on water for the first time in India. This technology combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, releasing only steam and water as byproducts.

According to India.com, a pilot project for this hydrogen train is scheduled to begin in December 2024, using around 40,000 liters of water per hour, with dedicated water storage facilities built to support its operation.

Indian Railways aims to introduce 35 hydrogen-powered trains across the country. Hydrogen fuel cells and infrastructure are already being established, with projects for hydrogen plants approved. According to railways spokesperson Dilip Kumar, each hydrogen train will cost around Rs 80 crore.

This state-of-the-art train will be 60 percent quieter than diesel trains, offering the same passenger capacity and reaching speeds of up to 140 km/h. It can travel up to 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, providing a quieter and greener ride for passengers.

The first hydrogen train is expected to operate on the 90 kilometer Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, with other scenic routes such as Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway and Kalka-Shimla Railway also being considered for future launches.
