Melbourne father allegedly held hostage with baby boy by alleged gunman in their Weir Views home breaks silence on terrifying ordeal

An emotional father-of-five fought back tears as he recalled the terrifying moment his and his young son’s lives were threatened by an alleged gunman during a two-hour siege at a suburban home where they gunfire was exchanged with heavily armed police.

A 26-year-old man is expected to face charges after allegedly barricading himself with a high-powered rifle inside a house in Weir Views in Melbourne’s west on Tuesday.

Ali and his one-year-old son just had awoke from an afternoon nap to find her daughter’s bedroom door locked after the allegedly armed intruder entered her Leon Drive home undetected.

“My wife went to pick my kids up from school and I was sleeping with my youngest son,” he told Nine News.

“One of my daughters’ bedrooms was locked and I tried to open it… I heard a noise that someone was inside and he said ‘I have a gun and I’m going to kill you if you come in.’

The guy had a gun, maybe shoot my son, maybe shoot me. I couldn’t sleep last night.

Ali recalled how the alleged gunman remained on the other side of the bedroom door during the exchange.

After backing away from the door, Ali called triple-0 and called his wife, who told him the police had cordoned off the street.

Police negotiated with the man for two hours before Ali and his son could be freed through a broken window at the front of the house, with the boy being transported to safety by police.

Ali is grateful for the police’s efforts.

“Thank God we’re safe, and the police certainly did a good job,” Ali said.

The surrounding area was cordoned off, with residents told to stay indoors while specialist officers surrounded the house.

Shocked neighbors told Nine News the scene was like a “Hollywood movie”.

“It was wild, it wasn’t fair,” said one.

“My son was just screaming, it was terrible as a mother, I’m sorry, as a mother, it was terrible,” another told the channel.

Superintendent Michael Cruse said police negotiators worked for two hours to encourage the man to leave peacefully.

Shortly after 6 p.m., police believed they had made a breakthrough when the alleged gunman agreed to let his hostages walk away unharmed.

Police say the man then opened fire on the officers.

“At that point there was a tactical entry into the house by the police. We will state at that time that another shot was fired at the police entry team and they were able to send in a police dog and the male offender was brought down,” Superintendent Cruse said.

Sup. Cruse revealed that one of the elite officers fired back but did not hit the man.

“The offense is very serious and it is completely unacceptable that members of the police should have been exposed to this type of danger,” Supt Cruse said.

Sup. Cruse said the man allegedly fired several shots at police after carjacking a 70-year-old woman around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Snake Valley.

The man then allegedly headed for Melton, where police deployed a police helicopter to follow him for more than 100km to the Weir Views home, where a dramatic siege took place.

Neighbors on Leon Drive told the media that the gunman was seen playing on a trampoline in a nearby yard before he forced his way into the home.

“When they searched the house, it was just chaotic,” one resident recalled.

“You heard glass breaking, canines barking, people obviously screaming, then we heard this explosion and more glass breaking.

Sucking. Cruse confirmed reports that the man was observed behaving in a bizarre manner before taking the hostages, but did not go into specifics.

“There was a period of time when he was behaving erratically in the backyard of the headquarters, yes,” he said.

The 26-year-old alleged offender from Snake Valley was taken to hospital after being bitten by a police dog during his dramatic arrest.

He is expected to be released from hospital in the coming days, where he will be interviewed by police and most likely charged.
