Street racing blamed in Van Nuys crash that kills innocent man, seriously injures friend

VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — It was supposed to be a short drive down Sherman Way by two longtime friends leaving church for dinner.

Instead, the two 22-year-olds, known for their dedication to their church and community, were the victims of a violent accident involving alleged street racers.

One friend was killed and the other hospitalized with multiple broken bones. Hoping to aid his recovery, his family has yet to tell the surviving victim that his friend died from his injuries.

The accident happened on Friday evening. Police say two vehicles, a Mercedes-Benz and a Rolls Royce, were apparently speeding down Sherman Way when they crashed into the Honda turning into the restaurant’s parking lot.

Rangel Vega and Alejandro Luquin, who were in the Honda, were hospitalized in critical condition, and Vega later died a day later in hospital.

The driver of the Mercedes was arrested for reckless driving and police are still looking for the driver of the Rolls who fled on foot.

“The community is mourning this loss,” said John Miranda, pastor at La Iglesia en el Camino.

Vega and Luquin, friends from middle school, had just left the church where they had held a youth service for the middle school.

Luquin underwent multiple surgeries and remains hospitalized with multiple broken bones.

“He broke both his legs, his arm, his jaw,” said his sister, Mayra Luquin. “He’s still in a lot of pain. His recovery will be long and hard for him.”

More heartache is to come as the truth about his friend was not shared.

“It’s hard,” Mayra said. “They keep asking about him. How is he, how is he? It’s hard. We can’t tell him he’s dead yet.”

A GoFundMe was created to help victims and their families.
