Nicole Williams pleads not guilty to murder despite earlier guilty pleas

The woman accused of setting up the attempted burglary that killed Glenn Walewicz three years ago is not agreeing to the facts of her case, even though she previously pleaded guilty.

Court proceedings involving Nicole Williams, now 40, have already seen long delays, and her decision pushed the case forward again.

In August 2023, Williams pleaded guilty charges of accessory to murder and knowingly engaging in an attempt to commit aggravated burglary.

Then in February 2024, the documents were filed in the ACT Supreme Court detailing the role he is said to have played in the shooting death of Mr Walewicz, 48, on June 10, 2021.

Her sentencing hearing has been postponed at least twice this year, while she too he tried unsuccessfully to be released on bail again before the hearing is scheduled for Wednesday (November 13).

However, that morning defense barrister Skye Jerome told the Supreme Court that her client “does not agree with the timing of the facts”.

She said her client remembered signing a piece of paper with her previous lawyers, but could not remember what it was.

Ms Jerome said it was now Williams’ “firm instructions” that she did not accept the factual basis supporting her allegations.

She said because her client did not accept any of the facts, the sentencing hearing could not proceed and she wanted to adjourn the matter.

Prosecutor Trent Hickey said that, unfortunately, it seemed to be the right course.

Judge Chrissa Loukas-Karlsson said, of course, that she would have to adjourn the matter.

She told Mr Walewicz’s family and supporters, who were present in the courtroom gallery, that the court “acknowledges the family’s pain”.

However, she said she had to apply the proper legal principles and “justice has to be done to everyone”.

“It is very, very unfortunate that the matter could not continue today, but there is no legal alternative given what happened,” Judge Loukas-Karlsson told the family.

The case was adjourned for directions to November 30. Williams remains in custody.

In early June 2021, Williams allegedly asked 23-year-old Gary Taylor to contact her son, Jayden Douglas Williams, and a 17-year-old boy about conducting a home invasion for her .

On the evening of June 10, the 17-year-old girl, a 12-year-old boy, Taylor and getaway driver Reatile Ncube met at Williams’ home, where he told them to do a “raid” of two people’s homes . because they owed him money.

Williams also allegedly gave the 17-year-old a .22 pump-action shotgun and told both him and Taylor that she thought one of the targets had a gun and might shoot them.

At around 11.30pm that evening, Ncube waited in the car while Taylor and the two teenagers drove up to Mansfield Place in Phillip to carry out the home invasion, but the three went to the wrong house and ended up knocking on Mr. Walewicz’s door. .

He cried, “Who is it?” from inside his home before one of the intruders said, “Open up.” The 17-year-old fired a gun when he opened the door, hitting him in the neck.

He died shortly thereafter.

Six people have been arrested over Mr Walewicz’s death.

Taylor was sentenced to over 10 years in prison while the 17-year-old shooter, who cannot be named because of his age, was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Jayden Williams was sentenced to two years in prison over his role, and Ncube he was also sentenced to two years in prison. Allegation against the 12-year-old boy was thrown away.
