The Ministry of Internal Affairs does not set a threshold of coverage or impact in assessing whether to act preemptively against the threats of hostile information campaigns. In the case of 10 fake websites that were blocked on 22 October 2024, the level of exposure of Singaporeans was rated as low. However, most of the websites were linked to global networks of fake news websites that cybersecurity researchers reported ran hostile information and influence campaigns in other countries. The authorities were satisfied that it was in the public interest to take preventive measures and not wait until a hostile information campaign was mounted. State Minister for Internal Affairs Sun Xueling said this in Parliament on Wednesday (November 13th) in response to a question from a lawmaker. She added that if individuals choose to bypass protections and use virtual private networks (VPNs) or other means to access dubious content, they do so at their own risk. In the meantime, licensees can appeal against the decisions of the Infocomm Media Development Authority.
