Tyereh Dontrell House was sentenced to nine months and extended probation after being convicted of assaulting a Hennepin County EMS crew in July.

5 EYE WITTNESS NEWS obtained video that shows House attacking one paramedic with a large piece of concrete while the other paramedic held him at bay with a gurney.

Sam Erickson, vice president of the Hennepin County Association of Paramedics and EMTs, told 5 EYE WITTNESS NEWS the union is happy the judge imposed the maximum sentence allowed, but said the union will push lawmakers to make changes for harsher penalties.

“These attacks, such as the one we are referring to, could have resulted in serious bodily harm or someone could have been injured or seriously injured, they need a second look by the legislature and possibly a stiffer sentence ,” Erickson said.

Hennepin Healthcare data shows that in the first nine months of this year, there were 243 threats and assaults against EMS workers, compared to 121 for all of 2023.

Hennepin Healthcare EMS Chief Martin Scheerer said attacks and threats are now a daily occurrence.

“Definitely tough penalties for people who try to harm our teams,” Scheerer said. “We’re just there to help and there are people trying to do us harm, which is really unfortunate.”
