The event in Evansville aims to get young women interested in criminal justice

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Students from the Southern Indiana Career and Technology Center had a pep talk Tuesday at the inaugural Future Women of Criminal Justice Symposium

The event aimed to interest young women in the field of criminal justice.

Officials say it also showed the growing number of female students in the criminal justice program, with 32 of the 42 students enrolled being women.

Student organizers say the inclusion of women in leadership roles is crucial to the success and progress of our community.

It also empowers all women to empower each other and take on impactful roles that drive positive change and inspire future generations.

A number of community leaders, including Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry, Vanderburgh District Attorney Diana Moers, EPD Sergeant Trudy Day and Officer Taylor Merriss attended to share their experiences and advice with the growing population of women interested in the field.

After the symposium, students were able to ask questions and take photos with each distinguished speaker, even sharing contact information for future opportunities.
