Local Catholic high school hosts prayer vigil to end gun violence

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Holy Family Cristo Rey High School held a prayer vigil for an end to gun violence on Tuesday. Religious leaders from around the area led the students in prayer, scripture and reflection.

Daniel McCormick is the director of ministry at Holy Family Cristo Rey. He said gun violence has affected so many people in our community, including the students at HFCR.

“Here at Holy Family Cristo Rey, we try to help them look to the future,” McCormick said.

The hope is that students will think about what they can do for their community and how they can become agents of change through both prayer and action.

One of Tuesday’s prayer leaders was Pastor Kelvin J. Anthony. He hopes the students left being able to spread light in the community.

“I would like them to be advocates and voices of change. I would like to see them be able to go out and encourage their brother, encourage their sister, encourage their cousin that violence is not the way, but peace is and then the words of Saint Francis of Assisi – “Lord, do – us instruments of peace,'” Pastor Anthony said.

The same group of religious leaders has hosted the same prayer vigil at least a dozen times across the state. They hope to own more at HFCR.
