PHDM is hosting a vaping education event in Escanaba

ESCABABA, Mich. (WLUC) – Delta and Menominee Counties Public Health wants to educate the public about youth vaping epidemic.

PHDM held a Caregiver Education Evening this evening in Escanaba. PHDM health educator Melissa Blume said caregivers include anyone with a school-age child.

Blume said the presentation included the health risks to children’s brain development, the chemicals children inhale along with nicotine, such as gasoline and car battery fluid, and how children hide and obtain vaping devices.

“I’ve talked to the kids that we’ve had that got caught vaping at school and that got them off the ground,” Blume said. “Some reported buying them from local establishments. They know that when certain people are working, they will come in or send someone else to buy for them. Brothers, you say. They often steal from their parents. That’s a big problem too.”

Blume says that even though no one will show up tonight, she will continue to organize the events.

Escanaba JR/SR High School Principal Andy Doutree says one kid caught vaping this year was only in sixth grade.
