A mechanic at o Amazon Distribution Center of South Florida died early Tuesday morning after a van he was working on fell on top of him.

The Port St. Police Department Lucie told Business Insider in a statement that Andrew Tabannah, 42, was trapped under a Amazon delivery van when the jack supporting it failed.

Tabannah’s colleagues placed additional jacks under the van and managed to extricate him and took “lifesaving measures until an ambulance arrived”.

St. County Firefighters Lucie arrived on the scene shortly after midnight. Tabannah was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.

Amazon’s fulfillment center in Port St. Lucie is located off the east coast of Florida, about 48 miles north of Palm Beach.

Police said they were investigating and that the incident appeared to be an accident, with no foul play suspected. They also said they have notified and are working with representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

In a statement provided to BI, Amazon said the person who died was an entrepreneur.

“Our thoughts are with the contractor, their family and friends at this very difficult time. As is standard procedure, we will be working closely with the contractor’s employer as they investigate this tragic accident and also conduct an internal investigation,” Maureen Lynch. Vogel, an Amazon spokesman, said.

Other Amazon employees and contractors who were scheduled to work were asked to stay home with pay.

OSHA did not respond to a request for comment from BI.

Amazon has been controlled in the past job security. Last year, federal inspectors with OSHA cited Amazon for workplace practices it was said to prioritize speed and put workers at risk of joint and back injuries.

A report released by the US Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in July found that Amazon employees are frequently injured while performing Prime Day orders.
