Police are investigating the accidental death at the Amazon facility

PORT ST. LUCIA, Fla. — A man died early Tuesday morning at an Amazon fulfillment center in Port St. Lucie, the officers said.

The incident occurred around 12:08 a.m. at the Amazon location located at 13450 Southwest Anthony F. Sansone Sr. Blvd.

Police said a mechanic became trapped under an Amazon delivery van, prompting officers and the St. Louis Fire District. Lucie County to respond to the facility.

Investigators said a preliminary investigation revealed Andrew Tabannah, 42, was working under the van, which was propped up on a jack stand.

At one point, police said the ruse failed and the van fell partially on top of Tabannah, pinning him underneath.

Co-workers placed additional jacks under the van and removed Tabannah from under the vehicle. Police said they began lifesaving measures until an ambulance arrived.

Tabannah, who was a contract worker and not an Amazon employee, was taken to Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said detectives have taken over the investigation, notified OSHA and will work with them on the case.

At this time, police said the death appears to be accidental and no foul play is suspected.

The community mourns the death

WPTV reporter Tyler Hatfield spoke with the victim’s neighbors and learned Tabannah was known for helping out in the community.

“It was a shock to hear his life ended so short,” said neighbor Madison Hadad.

In the wake of the tragedy, Hadad said his thoughts are now with Tabannah’s wife and family.

“I can’t even imagine every feeling that’s going through his mind right now,” Hadad said.

Madison Hadad talks about the generosity Andrew Tabannah showed her family before Hurricane Milton last month.

She said Tabannah was the perfect neighbor who helped her family during Hurricane Milton.

“They came and (asked), ‘What can we do to help you?'” Hadad said.

She said they helped her and other neighbors put up hurricane shutters ahead of the storm.

“It was an incredibly sweet gesture,” Hadad said. “It’s something we’ll never forget.”

Hadad said now is the time for the community to support Tabannah’s family.

“We will help to be good neighbors as he led and showed us by example,” Hadad said. “We will continue to pour that love into his family that his family poured into us.”

An Amazon spokesperson released the following statement regarding the incident:

“Our thoughts are with the contractor, his family and friends at this very difficult time.”
