Red Wings injured Alex Lyon passes key test

DETROIT – Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon returned to practice on Tuesday and appears close to returning to the lineup.

Lyon missed two games with a lower-body injury sustained in training last week.

“I just had a little hiccup there, but I’m feeling better now and the body is good to go and excited and itching to start,” Lyon said.

“I just want you to be safe and cautious and take the right steps in terms of balance if it’s healthy for you and make sure everything is coacetic. Everything is going well now. I felt really, really good in training today.”

Coach Derek Lalonde said Cam Talbot will start Wednesday at Pittsburgh (7:30 p.m., TNT), the start of a four-game road trip that continues in California. Ville Husso will make the save. They hope Lyon will be ready by the weekend (Friday at Anaheim or Saturday at Los Angeles).

When Lyon is released, Husso will return to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Lalonde said they won’t carry three goalies.

“We have the list room now, so they could,” he said. “But Cam and even Alex were playing at a pretty high level consistently. So ideally we’d like to bring Alex back. But again, it will depend on how he reacts in the next couple of days.”
