Regina 2024 election: 10 candidates in the ward

Ward 10 contains a voting population of 19,471 and consists of the community associations of Normanview, Walsh Acres, Lakeridge, Garden Ridge, Argyle Park and Englewood, as well as school board subdivision six.

Ward 10 has no incumbent, with an outgoing councillor. Landon Mohl is not seeking re-election after one term as mayor.

Anita Adefuye says she is ready to tackle key issues such as community safety, housing, affordable housing, fair taxation and fiscal responsibility.

Adefuye holds a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Regina and is pursuing her Ph.D.

If elected, Adefuye says she will focus on investing in infrastructure, providing reliable public transportation and essential services such as affordable childcare, waste management and community programs.

Chris Simmie offers diverse work experience including infrastructure construction, TV production, volunteering, communications and small business.

If elected to represent Ward 10, Simmie promises to focus on key areas such as infrastructure, transportation, housing affordability and sustainable municipal operations.

With a “strong understanding of economics and politics”, Simmie claims he is well placed to help the Queen attract investment and navigate a changing global landscape.

Clark Bezo is campaigning for ‘No politics, just progress’.

The engineer by trade spent most of his career working at the Evraz Steel Plant after serving in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) for 13 years.

Most recently, Bezo founded a small business assisting condominium associations with financial planning and capital projects.

He says his experience gives him insights into the local economy and business needs that he will need to serve the residents of the 10th Ward.

Jerry Flegel is returning to civic politics after a four-year hiatus. Flegel served as alderman for the 10th Ward from 2003 to 2020.

He is campaigning to return to his old seat under the priorities of roads, snow removal, crime and taxes.

Flegel is a past president of the North Regina Little League and Regina Crime Stoppers. In addition, he has been actively involved in the Ward 10 business community for the past 35 years.

“Now is the time to bring me back,” he said in his introduction.

“We could see six new councilors with no experience. The last four years have made it clear that experience is essential.”

Finally, political newcomer Umer Syed makes a play for Ward 10. Syed is an active volunteer and part of an educational team in childcare.

Syed has leadership experience in the rail and transportation industry, enabling him to “target growth and implement effective strategies for success.”

Syed is dedicated to community initiatives that empower youth and support their needs.

“Together, let’s explore what’s working and what needs to be improved for a brighter future,” he said on his candidate page.
