An Ohio man died following an encounter with police after he abducted his 7-year-old daughter without custody from a relative’s home, authorities said.

On Monday, November 11, around 3 p.m., Charles Alexander, 43, took the girl from a relative’s home in Empire following an argument and physical altercation, Associated Press reports.

An Amber Alert was immediately issued asking the public to be on the lookout for a Ford F-650 U-Haul truck with Arizona plates after Alexander took the girl without permission, WOW reports.

Around 8 p.m. that night in Brunswick, police tried to pull over Alexander, who led authorities on a multi-department chase, the Medina County Sheriff’s Office said, according to the AP.

Police deployed law enforcement devices that deflated his tires.

Alexander drove the flat-tire U-Hall from an exit to a fast-food restaurant, where he spoke on the phone to several dispatch centers before he was shot, the sheriff’s office said, the AP reports.

He died shortly after, Columbus’ dispatch reports.

The sheriff’s statement did not say whether Alexander was armed or what prompted the officers to open fire, the AP reports.

The girl was found safe in Medina and returned to her relatives, the sheriff’s office said.
