‘Impossible’ for assisted dying bill to be ‘tight enough’, Tory leader says

Sophie Ridge he now heads to the assisted dying debate alongside the Tory MP Danny Kruger.

The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill was published on Monday and revealed that the drug that will end a patient’s life will have to be self-administered, with doctors not allowed to do so.

It also states that people must be terminally ill and expect to die within six months, and a death claim will only be allowed after it has been approved by two independent doctors and a High Court judge .

Mr Kruger is against the proposals.

He says: “Even under the current conditions, I’m afraid the bill is not tight enough, it’s impossible for it to be tight enough.

“I’m also concerned about the principle that we’re establishing, if we pass this bill, we’re effectively saying, ‘Yes, some people are better off dead, and doctors and judges should have the power to determine who those people are.’

“I think it sends a terrible signal to the fragile, the disabled, the mentally ill.”

“High quality palliative care” should be the focus

Mr Kruger says he is “open to” further guarantees, but at the moment believes it is “impossible to have an invoice that is certain”.

He adds that if the UK had “high-quality palliative care” for everyone, no one would need the option of assisted dying.

The shadow minister also questions the validity of “personal stories” of people “dying badly”.
