PHILIPPI, W.Va (WDTV) – A man was killed in a car crash in Philippi Tuesday morning, according to the Philippi Police Department.

Authorities responded to the crash at about 8 a.m. near the former Alderson Broaddus University baseball field on Route 119 and found several damaged vehicles.

The man reentered the roadway, struck a tan Chevy Cruze, drove through the old baseball field, went through a fence, struck a tree and rolled about 50 to 60 feet over the embankment, police said .

The Philippi Fire Department had to extricate the man from the vehicle and he was taken to Broaddus Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man’s identity is being withheld at this time until family can be notified, police said.

The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department and West Virginia State Police assisted the Philippi Police Department at the scene.
