John Mulaney opens up about his addiction recovery journey—and the support he’s received along the way.

The Saturday Night Live alum, 42, who was revealed as GQThe 2024 man spoke candidly with the publication on Tuesday, Nov. 12, about his whirlwind year as a new father of two, as well as his ongoing recovery from addiction.

“There was a time when I would have told you I couldn’t fly, sleep or perform unless I had a Klonopin,” Mulaney told the press. “I would have said, ‘This sucks because I don’t always want to take Klonopin and Xanax, but I have to.’ “

The comedian, who he entered rehab for cocaine and alcohol addiction in December 2020, recalled a “crazy” night at the height of his addiction when he had taken so many drugs he thought he was going to die.

“I thought, ‘Okay… I’m going to slow down completely. It was like a Tuesday. And Thursday night, we did it again,” he said.

Mulaney said his wife Olivia Munn chose to organize a mini-intervention of his own to get more involved in his recovery journey. When she was six months pregnant, Mulaney said she also decided she would take random drug tests to make sure she stayed on track to a successful recovery.

“It’s like a relief … I like not having a single question on her mind or anyone else’s mind,” Mulaney said. “Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m going for this ride. It gives me confidence.”

PEOPLE first reported Mulaney and Munn’s romance in May 2021. Pair tie the knot in July and share two children, a son Malcolm Hiepwho turns 3 on Nov. 24 and 2-month-old daughter May Junereceived by surrogate.

While appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2021, Mulaney called Munn, 44, “amazing” for supporting him in his recovery and that she “held my hand through that hell.”

“(She) ended up dating me from recovery, which is what they call a reverse catch,” he joked, adding, “It’s a very, very lucky thing to have met this woman.”

Munn, who revealed her diagnosis of bilateral breast cancer in March, he said GQ about meeting Mulaney at that point in his life, “I was looking at someone newly sober, on the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know them well enough to help them.”
