Briton, 38, dies after £7,000 lift from Brazil to Turkey after surgeon ‘gave out midway’

A BRIT woman died following a Brazilian breast lift in Turkey after the surgeon walked out mid-operation, an inquest heard.

Hayley Dowell, 38, had £7,000 for a series of operations – including BBL, a tummy tuck and liposuction.

But she died just hours later after suffering an embolism while recovering at Istanbul’s BHT Clinic.

Her husband Neil Dowell, who had flown to Turkey along with his wife, told an inquest that she had not been properly informed of the risks.

Neil also claimed he was asked to sign a consent form after Hayley, from Eastleigh, Hampshirehe had died on October 3 last year.

He told the Winchester Coroner Court: “It was supposed to be a six-hour operation, but it was reduced to one hour 45 (minutes).

“The surgeon left halfway through the operation and let the anesthetist do the work. You can’t do both at the same time.”

Neil said the surgeon was promoted as one of the “top five in Turkey”.

He added: “No risk to her has been outlined.”

Hayley’s mother Ann told the inquest her daughter would not have known the risks’ of one of the operations because she had not agreed to all three.

Coroner Nicholas Walker said he would lead an inquest investigate in the information Hayley received and the circumstances of her death.

He also suggested that he would write a Prevention of Future Report deaths to help prevent future tragedies.

The coroner adjourned the hearing ahead of the full inquest due to take place in January.

Hayley’s death is the latest in a string of tragedies to hit Brits who go under the knife.

In August, Kaydell BrownThe 38-year-old died after paying £5,400 for the procedure, as well as a tummy tuck and breast surgery.

While mom Alice Webb died in September after allegedly undergoing surgery in the UK.

What are Brazilian lifts and why are they so popular?

Buttock augmentation – known as a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) – is used to make the bottom look bigger, rounder and lifted.

Surgeons transfer fat, inject filler or insert silicone-filled implants.

It is the fastest growing cosmetic procedure, but also one of the most dangerous, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

Many patients travel to Turkey or seek unregistered surgeons in the UK and are not given full information about the risks.

BBLs carry the highest risk of all cosmetic surgeries – with more than one death in 4,000 procedures.

Thanks to celebrities who undergo such operations, many women hope to imitate their appearance.

Consultant Clinical Psychologist Dr Anu Sayal-Bennett, Chartered Fellow of the British Psychological Society, said BBC: “Despite the fact that there’s so much about body positivity, there’s pressure on women — and men, too — to look a certain way.”

Many people travel abroad for the procedure because it is cheaper and the advertising is “terribly seductive”, combined with the idea of a beach holiday, Dr Sayal-Bennett added.

Brazilian butt liftsalso known as buttock augmentation procedures, involves injecting fat or filler into the buttocks to shape them.

But the wrong injection too deep into the buttocks can pump chemicals into the bloodstream and cause fatal clots, infections or sepsis.

They can also go wrong if the anesthetic is wrong or people have an allergic reaction.

The Foreign Office says 28 Britons have died after cosmetic surgery in Turkey since 2019.
