Royal Caribbean cruise ship sailing to Miami buffeted by rough winds and seas

Cruise ship passengers sailing from Spain TO Florida they were weighed down in rough seas and winds, injuring at least one person on board.

Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas was sailing the Atlantic Ocean near Spain on Nov. 7 when gusts of wind flared, throwing objects and people around the ship, according to passengers on board.

Video shot by passenger Jonathan Parrish showed damaged furniture, broken glass and food in the dining area after the inclement weather.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told FOX Weather in a statement that the ship stopped in Las Palmas, Spain, to allow an injured passenger to receive medical attention.

“During an unexpected gust of wind near Tenerife, Spain, one of our sails experienced a sudden movement,” the statement said. “One guest was injured and required further medical attention, resulting in the ship arriving in Las Palmas, Spain for a medical disembarkation. We communicated these changes directly to our guests.”

Another passenger aboard the ship told FOX Weather that the shutdown and weather delayed the sailing by three days. The vessel is en route to PortMiami, crossing the Atlantic on Tuesday and expected to arrive on Thursday.

The passenger said the seas were still rough. According to the cruise tracking website Cruise Mapper, THE winnow they are moderately windy and the waves are about 9 feet.
