Drew and Jonathan Scott talk about a new HGTV show

Great Scotts! Home magicians Jonathan and Drew Scott helps people update homes they no longer love Don’t hate your home with The Property Brothers. From dodgy basements to shady kitchen setups, this new show gave us the perfect excuse to chat with the always entertaining siblings about the latest project they built together.

I’m guessing you’ve realized through your own work that we all have a part – or parts – of our spaces that we hate?

Drew Scott: Every person has something in their house that drives them crazy. No one else might notice, but you do, and your resentment is getting to you! Even Jonathan and I have things we can’t stand about our homes, and you’d think ours would be perfect. But no!

Jonathan Scott: It’s also funny, because the thing you hate most about your home is often something you can’t easily fix. It’s the wall that juts out awkwardly in the kitchen or the pedestal sink in the bathroom. That’s what makes this show so great, because these homes have good bones or are in the perfect location. Families just need help addressing those problem areas so they can finally move on…and find something else to hate.

What is the most common complaint?

Jonathan: Lack of space or misuse of space (also) makes sense: when you are in one place for a long time, your things grow or your needs change, but the house remains the same. There is nothing more valuable than storage in a home.

Drew: But there are always solutions, whether it’s de-cluttering, smarter storage, opening up the floor plan, or even cosmetic upgrades. It just takes a little creative problem solving. And us, of course. (laugh)

The opener features a couple with five rescue dogs and a huge yard. What was the biggest challenge there?

Jonathan: Bring enough dog treats! (laugh) Space was easily the biggest issue here… They were constantly tripping over each other.

Drew: We were able to do it with a better look and access to the back yard, but it was a challenge. We also snuck in a little extra special for the chickens, because our goal is always to make every member of the family happy.

How much fun is demo day?!

Jonathan: Demo day is the best! It’s a great form of therapy. Having a bad day or need to get rid of aggression? Nothing beats a sledgehammer. (laugh)

Drew: There is something so freeing about knocking down that part of your home that has been taunting you all these years. The owners were actually releasing their demons!

What is your favorite room type to create or expand?

Drew: I enjoy improving meeting and entertaining spaces. It’s all about spending time with your kids and loved ones, so it’s fun to tailor these homes to what each individual family needs.

Jonathan: Backyards are my absolute favorite. Outdoor space is a luxury and I like to maximize the potential so that families can use it as much as possible.

11 years have passed since then Brothers of Property debuted. You’ve been in TV Guide Magazine countless times and created so many shows together. How has your relationship changed over the years?

Drew: While our lives are totally different now with our kids and partners, we’re still the same guys who love to pull pranks on each other and have fun.

Jonathan: If anything, our dad jokes only got better. Or worse, depending on who you ask…(laugh)
