Dundee car park rape suspect ‘caught on CCTV’

Police investigating the rape of a 16-year-old student in Dundee believe the suspect was caught on CCTV.

Police said the girl was out with a friend when the two were approached by the male suspect.

After leaving his girlfriend, the man attacked the girl in a small car park in the Cowgate area of Dundee.

Detectives said the incident happened between 1am and 1.30am on Sunday.

The officer leading the investigation said a grainy image of the man believed to be responsible was captured on CCTV.

Det Insp Graeme Wishart said: “It is the early stages of the investigation but the main positives are the initial CCTV trawls.

“Obviously we have a sighting of the person responsible, but we need to develop that to get him identified.”

The detective said the girl had been with a friend before the attack.

He said: “The two friends had been socializing and making their own way home.

“The man spoke to both of them and then the friend left the area.

“He was unknown to them before that.”

DI Wishart said the girl walked into the town center after the attack and was seen distressed by a member of the public, who alerted police officers.

The detective said a dedicated team was carrying out CCTV and door-to-door enquiries.

The suspect is described as being in his 20s, white, of slim build and medium height with a short beard.

He was wearing a beige or khaki jacket, a black t-shirt, dark trousers and light brown boots.
