Is Garrett Greene ready to return? Neal Brown explains what he needs to see in training

It’s been almost a month since we last saw Garrett Greene in action for West Virginia Mountaineers. He exited the Kansas State game at halftime with an upper-body injury and has been out since,

Fortunately for the Mountaineers, they have a capable backup at quarterback in Nicco Marchiol and were able to win both games without Greene available, beating both Arizona and Cincinnati on the road.

This past weekend we saw Greene go through warmups and suit up for the Cincinnati game, indicating that he could have been used in an emergency situation. But this week marks the first time he’s had a chance to get back on the field, according to head coach Neal Brown.

“Since the Kansas State game last Wednesday he’s been doing a little bit of 7-on-7 work and that’s really the only work he’s had. You’re talking now that it’s been three weeks, right? So he worked 7 to 7 today,” he stated. “Tomorrow will be 11 to 11 first thing, so I have to see him at 11 to 11 before I make a decision on whether he’s ready to go . It’s a big dismissal.”

As Brown has mentioned in recent weeks, because Greene is a veteran and has played so much football, there isn’t necessarily a set number of practices he needs to get to in order to play Saturday against Baylor. It will all come down to how well he looks in training in full team training and if physically he is in a good place.

With the way Marchiol has been able to play for the most part, don’t be surprised if Neal Brown continues to redshirt in year two while leaving some packages in the game plan for his senior quarterback .

As for when a decision will be made, well, it may not come until Thursday or Friday. The decision will not be made public before kickoff, as Brown explained, for obvious reasons.

“I think you want them to prepare for both. Not that we are drastically different, but we are different when one or the other plays. Only the fact that one of them is right-handed and one of them is left-handed makes it different. Some strong points on how you’re going to call the game…yeah. So no doubt. Part of the reason is that they don’t know. I’m not trying to hide it.”
