Kolkata doctor rape-murder case trial begins, accused Sanjay Roy claims he was ‘framed’ by senior police officers

Kolkata, Nov 11 (PTI) The trial in the rape and murder case of a doctor began in a Kolkata court on Monday, three months after the doctor’s body was found in the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The proceedings were held behind closed doors in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das.

Prime accused Sanjay Roy, who was present in court during the trial, later claimed outside court that he was duped by senior police officers, including former city police commissioner Vineet Goyal.

The victim’s father was present in court as a witness, police sources said.

Roy was arraigned in the afternoon and proceedings are being held behind closed doors.

The first accused, while leaving the court, again claimed that he was framed by the administration and that he is not guilty.

“They didn’t let me speak even today. I didn’t do anything and I was rooted,” Roy told reporters as he was led away.

“Senior officers are involved in this. The government is supporting them. They have threatened me. I am giving you the names. They are Vineet Goel and DC Special… They have conspired to frame me in this,” Roy said.

On November 4, when the charges were laid against him, he pleaded not guilty.

Roy was booked under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita Section 64 (rape), Section 66 (punishment for causing death or resulting in persistent vegetative state) and 103 (punishment for murder).

Roy was arrested by the Kolkata police on August 10, a day after the maid’s body was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital.

Later, the CBI took over the investigation in the case on an order from the Calcutta High Court.

The incident sparked nationwide outrage. PTI SCH NN
