Drivers stranded on Highway 99 as dust storm sweeps through Tulare County

TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — The dust storm, wet weather and strong winds left traffic jammed along Highway 99 in Tulare County for months.

Strong winds toppled several fences and trees, while blowing dust reduced visibility to zero in some places.

After the dust came more gusts of wind and then the rain.

A group traveling from the Veterans Day Parade Run in Porterville back home to Fresno had to stop halfway at Bravo Farms in Traver.

Some say they have never experienced a dust storm like this in the area.

“I’ve been in Fresno for 40 years, this is the first time I’ve ever seen a storm like this, it was really scary. When we were there, the wind was picking up, dust, leaves and trees were hitting our windshield and I’m so glad I stopped,” said Teresa, who had to stop because of the storm.

“Some of them drive faster, they probably think the faster they drive, the faster they get out of the storm…please don’t do that, it was really scary to feel the wind past us.”

Teresa and her crew, the traveling sisters, say it was helpful to be in a group.

They were also in communication with people back home who were informing them of the weather conditions.

Although the wind and dust have since subsided, rain has been constant for parts of the southern valley and roads can be slippery.
